Anyone Else Notice Cars With Burnt Out LED's?

Lately, I’ve seen quite a few Accords (and CR-V’s) with either a completely burnt out LED on one side, or one LED strip that is dimmer than the other -such as the picture above. I’ve also seen quite a few previous gen CX-5's with one burnt out LED...

What gives? Aren’t LED’s supposed to be long lasting?? Makes me question the longevity of LED low beams that you find in many cars today.

The halogen DRL’s in my mom’s 06 Accord (which are just the high beams on low power) , have yet to burn out, even after 140,000 miles, which is a little surprising. Why are these LED's burning out so quickly?

Supposed to be long lasting yes , but typically(atleast in household lights) it’s the driver that gives up and shits the bed, rarely the diodes themselves. Another issue is that the LED’s are integrated so well you can’t “officially” replace the chips/driver, so it’s new light cluster/housing :)

Like any semiconductor they can fail prematurely. Even more so if they didn’t include sufficient heat sinking. Also if they’re arranged in series/parallel  groups, one diode failing can break the circuit and cause several to go out,

LEDs last longer than a filament-in-glass design, but are much more expensive. You have to replace the entire assembly, usually costing upwards of $500, where a halogen lamp will cost like five bucks. There’s also more elctronics that can and will go wrong in an LED headlight, and they’re more sensitive to voltage changes than a traditional lap is.

Depending on the car, you could also be seeing one of them off while the car is using a turn signal.

Been noticing this on modern yet aging Cadillacs, Ch argers, etc, where they have long lines of LEDs but a couple out here or there. L ooks like a smile with missing teeth.

When I was a Mazda tech we did used to see it pretty often on the 2016 cx5s. One side drl would be out or dim/flickering. I think it was usually the ballast at least that's what my foreman said, we always just replaced the whole assembly under warranty.

Yeah its weird I never saw it on other models with LED DRLs just the 2016 cx5s and then it was all new for 2017 but i left Mazda shortly after those came out.
